Lifeline adds a texting option in the hope of reaching more people

It’s good to see that Lifeline has added texting to its options for seeking help. In the past I think we’ve underestimated how difficult some of us find it to speak to a real, live person, even on the phone. The slightest pause, or the wrong tone of voice, can make you feel judged or misunderstood, or that your problem is being trivialised.

After my son died by suicide I called a helpline (not Lifeline) to ask for advice on how I could best support my other children. The woman I spoke to was far more interested in telling me that her own son had died from natural causes, as though that made her a better mother. Somehow hearing her speak in her affected motherly and sympathetic voice made it sound even more punishing.
