Are parents really to blame for everything?

Are parents really to blame for everything?

I’m going to be promoting Poor me!the book I wrote with Piers, at a series of library talks so I wanted to check the latest statistics on young people and debt. I was interested to see that the articles like this one in the Herald Sun reported the latest Roy Morgan findings that young Australians carry a high proportion of debt to income – but I do wish they wouldn’t take such a simplistic view of the role parents play.

As Piers says himself in the book: “There’s a lot of good advice around for people who want to listen. Obviously, I didn’t.  Like a lot of young people, I didn’t like being told what I should and shouldn’t do. And, once I was 18, I didn’t have to listen to anybody.”

Most parents do their best to set a good example or at least point their children in the right direction. But that doesn’t mean they’re going to take a blind bit of notice.
